Since 2008, MSMAP has held an open house inviting members of the community to see what we do and celebrate the efforts and talents of children, teens, and adults in the program. Since 2009, MSMAP has run a food drive to help contribute to those in need during the holidays.

Why a Food Drive?
Cindy Smith, administrative assistant at City Park and Coordinator for the Senior Nutrition Program, offers sobering details about many seniors in our community who need assistance.
- In 2010, one senior in Dunsmuir was evicted from a condemned building after receiving five days notice and is now living in a camper shell (that is correct: a shell, not a camper).
- Many homebound seniors have no family in the area so the only social interactions they experience are with the drivers delivering meals.
Even simple food items will make a big difference in the lives of many seniors throughout the holidays and year round.
What Type of Food Items?
Shelf-stable, non-perishable food donations are acceptable. This includes:
• all canned goods: soups, beans, tuna, etc.
• boxed items: crackers cup-a-noodles, ramen, etc.
• other items: peanut butter, jellies, etc.
Ideally, packaged food items that can easily be prepared in a saucepan are best. Some items will be used in the kitchen at City Park, others packaged into the home deliveries, and the remaining will be given to seniors who ask.
About the Senior Nutrition Project
“Since 1974, there has been a hot lunch program for senior citizens at the City Park Recreation Center...55+ meals are delivered to homebound seniors in the South County (Meals-on-Wheels). Transportation to and from the Mt. Shasta lunch site is also available...The Senior Nutrition Project strives to not only meet the nutritional needs of its senior participants, but also recognizes the importance of socialization and life enrichment. Informational programs, special events, and other activities are a regular component of the senior lunch program schedule.”

3rd Open House & Food Drive
December 15, 2010
Promising plenty of action, community service, and a new black belt, our 2010 Open House demonstration did not disappoint. We had a packed house of participants, having to split the group into “Team Griffin” and “Team Chuck” in order to allow everyone to show their skills. Mike Rodriguez, Director of Mount Shasta Recreation & Parks District, stopped by to share his appreciation for everyone’s kind donations of food and to share a couple of meaningful stories of how a little food goes a long to holiday cheer.
Food Drive
We collected approximately the same amount of food items as last year (15 bags), a significant haul for a two-hour event. The food contributions will definitely improve meal quality for many of our local seniors.
The food was dropped off at City Park on Friday, December 17. Chef Anne was extremely thankful and very impressed with your generous donations. She makes every effort to ensure seniors in the nutrition program receive quality meals, and she’s looking forward to using some of your donations to prepare delicious, nutritious meals. Each of her cooks tastes the meals and adds fresh ingredients (basil, vegetables, etc.) as their budget allows.
Other portions of your “kindness-in-a-can” were packaged for home deliveries just in time for the holidays.

2nd Open House & Food Drive
December 16, 2009
The Mount Shasta Martial Arts Program and Nuria’s Dance Academy held a very successful event on December 16, 2009. There were martial arts, dance, and tenagle (ping-pong/tennis) demonstrations, food, and raffle prizes.
This was the second open house hosted by MSMAP and was a big difference from the year before with a working heater(!), modern training area, and professional dance floor. We offer area families a truly unique, affordable activity center for all to enjoy.

The generosity of our local community made our food drive a HUGE success with 15 grocery bags filled with food to support our neighbors in need this holiday season! The food contributions go to Meals-On-Wheels Shasta.

Housewarming Party & Open House
November 19, 2008
MSMAP held a very successful event on Wednesday, November 19 from 4:30 to 6:30pm. Reports vary from 25 to 60 people with lots of new faces popping in to see the action.
We performed five demos (three taekwondo, two yongmudo), had lots of food and treats, and began our tradition of raffle prizes by giving away three raffle prizes including two $50 Gift Certificates compliments of the Wayside Grill.
This event allowed us to make our cozy warehouse-style training center feel a little more like home as well as bring in curious people interested in martial arts training.
