Mount Shasta Recreation & Parks District and the Mount Shasta Martial Arts Program will celebrate “Korean Thanksgiving” with attendees of the Senior Nutrition Program this Friday, September 16 at City Park.

“The Korean holiday Chuseok is the most important Korean holiday,” says MSMAP Head Instructor Chuck Buhs. “It includes elements of Thanksgiving, Grandparents’ Day, Memorial Day, and Christmas. It is held on the 15th day of the eighth month of the Chinese lunar calendar—September 12 this year.”

Beginning as a celebration to the finish of a long, hard agricultural year and a successful harvest, Chuseok today is a chance to connect with family and honor ancestors through various commemorations. The main characteristic of this holiday is sharing the abundance that results from hard work and enjoying community-wide activities with gifts, food, song, games, and dance.

Chuseok allows participants in our program to show their appreciation for the seniors in our community,” said Buhs. “People training in the martial arts of taekwondo and yongmudo learn many aspects of Korean culture, and appreciation and respect for our elders is very important in any culture.”

In addition to an action-filled taekwondo demonstration, MSMAP is also providing “A Taste of Korea” allowing the seniors, joined by local school children from Oak Leaf Charter School, to sample authentic Korean food prepared by Silva’s Restaurant in Weed.
