With the onset of the winter, the Mt. Shasta Recreation and Parks District and Mount Shasta Martial Arts Program are inviting families to two holiday events.
The first event is MSMAP’s 4th Open House & Holiday Food Drive on Wednesday, December 14 from 4:30 to 6:30pm. This annual event features demonstrations of the Korean martial arts of taekwondo and yongmudo. Highlights include precision kicking, high-flying dive rolls over obstacles, throws, and board breaks.

“The children, teens, and adults are working hard to share how the martial arts can be used for fitness, competition, self-defense, and fun,” said MSMAP head instructor Chuck Buhs.
An important part of this annual event is the food drive benefiting the Senior Nutrition Program through the Mt. Shasta City Park.
“Community support of all of our senior services is an on-going need and any level of donation helps us continue these vital services needed by so many,” said Recreation and Parks District Administrator Mike Rodriguez.
Those attending are asked to bring a shelf-stable, non-perishable food item as a gift to the seniors in our community. In keeping with tradition, everyone over 18 years of age that contributes to the food drive is entered into a drawing for gifts from local businesses.
“We are very much aware of the day-to-day struggle faced by our senior clients having to stretch every available dollar,” said Rodriguez. “Many of our homebound seniors have limited resources to spend on healthy food while also trying to make ends meet. This is where the Senior Nutrition Program’s home delivered meal service makes a difference.”

“We’re glad to help with our own special way of celebrating the holidays,” said Buhs. “Exciting martial arts action, giving away cool gifts, and, most importantly, helping to brighten the spirits of those less fortunate during this season of giving.”
In addition, with the closure of the Siskiyou Ice Rink, the Recreation and Parks District and MSMAP are also offering two three-day Winter Break Mini-Camps for children ages 5 to 15. The camps in MSMAP’s modern facility are designed to “allow area children to release pent-up energy in a healthy, constructive way at the same time learning important skills for fitness, positive social behavior, and self-defense,” according to Buhs.
“The Recreation District is excited to once again partner with the MSMAP during the Christmas holidays to offer this unique recreation opportunity for kids in the south county,” said Rodriguez.
The mini-camps run from Dec. 27 to 29 and Jan. 3 to 5, from 10am to 2pm. Register through City Park (926-2494) or MSMAP (859-2024; www.MtShastaMA.org/camp/).
The Recreation & Parks District the official provider for the senior meal program thru a contract with the CA Department of Aging and Planning & Service Area 2 - Agency on Aging. Donations of food and money can be made by calling 926-2494.
